Shiv Gaglani from West Shore High School wins 2004 Sr. Nelson Ying Science Competition held at the Orlando Science Center on April 23, 24, and 25, 2004. The 15-year-old Brevard County high-school student won first place and a $5,000 award. His winning entry is titled "The Holy Grail of Tissue Engineering: Rapid Angiogenesis for Effective Organ Perfusion" For his project, Shiv used a modified inkjet printer to produce layers of tissue that he said someday could be used to help create organs for transplant. Shivs West Shore High School teacher/mentor, Tonya Galaida, won a $1,000 companion award with another $1000 to West Shore High School.
The four remaining finalist each won a $1000 award for their meritorious work. They are: Connie Pham Lake Highland Preparatory School The Use of Anti-Cancer Drugs in the Treatment of Malaria. Michael Spertus Spruce Creek High School Cytoprotective Activities from the Selective Stimulation and Potentiation of A; pha-7 naChR Responses: Implications in Alzheimers Disease. Cristina White Spruce Creek High School The Effects of Driving on Volusia County Beaches. Richard Zhang West Shore High School The Development of a Sensitive NaI Crystal Scintillation Detector to counter Illicit Trafficking in Radioactive Substances.
This years distinguished panel of judges was composed of: Dr. Bob Deliwala Kennedy Space Center, NASA, Dr. Tom Dreschel Kennedy Space Center, NASA, Dr. Cherie Geiger University of Central Florida, Dr. David Kuhn University of Central Florida, Dr. Les Kramer Lockheed Martin, Dr. Ravi Margasahayam Kennedy Space Center, NASA, Dr. Debbie Reinhart University of Central Florida, Dr. Jay Shivamoggi Rollins College, Dr. Philip Tang Kennedy Space Center, NASA and Dr. Andrew Winningham - University of Central Florida.
This year, in their field trips, the finalists visited scientists at the Orlando Science Center, the FDLE Crime Laboratory and the School of Optics at the University of Central Florida.
