The following are the Eligibility Requirements and details for entering the Orlando Science Center Dr. Nelson Ying Science Competition:

Be a bona fide resident of the Orlando Science Center (OSC) 8 County Service Area in Florida:
        Brevard
        Lake
        Marion
        Orange
        Osceola

        Polk
        Seminole
        Volusia
High School Student or home school equivalent (grades 9, 10, 11, & 12)
Have a letter of reference from their science teacher.
Have a project in one of the Physical Science Categories:
        Chemistry
        Computer Science
        Earth and Space Sciences
        Engineering
        Environmental Sciences
        Mathematics
        Physics

Submit a Paper along with an Application and Project Summary and Certification (located on this web site) by the due date. The paper is to be no more than ten pages, double spaced type, font size 12. References and appendix to be no more than 5 double spaced pages.

Finalist and Winner Selection Process:

Submit an Application Packet including the paper by 5:00 PM on the due date.  See timelines page for schedule and application for required content. A panel of distinguished judges will select five (5) finalists. If selected as a finalist, perform an oral presentation at the Orlando Science Center of about 20 minutes in length and be prepared to answer questions by the judging panel. The finalists will get an expense paid weekend in Orlando. Friday will consist of field trips to scientific venues, Saturday morning will be dedicated to orals with a behind the scenes visit to OSC on Saturday afternoon. There will be an Award Dinner. All finalists are expected to participate in the total process.

Criteria for Judging:

The finalists and winner will be selected on the following criteria:

Originality of Research: looking into the future/benefit to humanity.

Student’s work versus role of mentor

Point of departure for hypothesis and its relationship to current scientific knowledge (State of the Practice)

Validity of conclusions

Experimental work and set-up

Documentation of scientific research supporting the project

Use of the Scientific Method

The Oral Presentation

Substance of the project

Discussion of future potential of project
Clarity
Ability to engage in discussion
